November 15, 2004—Speaking today at the Fall 2004 CIO Summit in Boca Raton, Florida, Wal-Mart CIO Linda Dillman said that many companies are “being encouraged to overdesign” their RFID projects. She compared the installation of Wal-Mart’s industry-leading RFID implementation to setting up a network, saying, “We didn’t have to change our legacy systems; we didn’t have to build a new data warehouse.” They simply made sure to immediately dispose of the excess, unnecessary data generated by the tagged goods. Dillman also cited some surprises that the new supply chain visibility has yielded, including the popularity of wrinkle and scar reduction creams as shoplifting targets. Such information represents precisely the unquantifiable, unforeseeable benefit that many have predicted will be revealed only after RFID has been incorporated in a supply chain.
