ARG‐US (meaning “watchful guardian”) remote monitoring systems technology was developed by Argonne National Laboratory under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Packaging Certification Program, Office of Packaging and Transportation, and Office of Environmental Management. Throughout the past decade, Argonne has developed, demonstrated and deployed two patented systems: smart drum technology and the remote area modular monitoring (RAMM)/TRAVELER. The goal has been to enhance the safety, security and safeguards of packaging containing nuclear and other hazardous radioactive materials, including spent nuclear fuel and high‐level waste, during storage, transportation and disposal. Hear Dr. Yung Liu, a senior nuclear engineer and manager of the Packaging Certification and Life Cycle Management Group in Argonne National Laboratory’s Decision & Infrastructure Sciences Division, discuss selected use cases of ARGUS remote monitoring systems at critical facilities, as well as the tracking and monitoring of nuclear cargos during vehicle and rail shipments, the agency’s geofencing and transport security plan, and its future directions.
